Musketeers Fan Write-Up

The Sioux City Musketeers are in a three-way for second place in the West Division with a 27-18-2 record. The Muskies finished the month of February with a 4-7-1 record and are currently 0-1 in the month of March.

Up Next:

The Sioux City Musketeers hit the road for a pair of games with the Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets at the Dispatch Ice Haus in Columbus. The Muskies are 1-1 against the Jackets this season, winning 3-0 on Nov. 18 and losing 2-1 Feb. 24 at the Tyson Events Center. Spencer Heichman has tallied 2 goals to lead Sioux City against Ohio. After the long trip, the Musketeers have 11 games remaining in the regular season. Of note are 2 games, one each against Lincoln and Sioux Falls, who are tied with the Muskies in the West Division. Nine of the final 13 games are on the road for Sioux City.

Last Week:

Sioux City went 1-2 last week. The Muskies dropped a 7-3 decision in Sioux Falls last Wednesday. Steve Quailer scored 2 goals in the contest, one short-handed and one on the power play.

The Muskies regrouped to put on a strong performance Friday and beat West Division leader Omaha, 3-2 in a shootout. Travis Oleksuk scored the lone goal in the shootout, while Josh Robinson turned away all 5 Lancer shooters. The win ended the Lancers’ 12 game win streak.

The Musketeers lost to the East Division leading Indiana Ice 5-1 on Saturday at the Tyson Events Center. The game was close at 2-1 going into the 3^rd period, but the Ice scored three times in the final stanza to put the game away. Jake Johnson scored the lone Musketeer goal, his first as a member of the Muskies, on a beautiful set-up from Joey Miller.

Musketeer Musings:

-Joey Miller has been named the new team captain for the Musketeers.

-As reported earlier, assistant coach Bobby Kinsella will be leaving the team at the end of the season to become the head coach and general manager of the Boston Jr. Rangers AAA midget team.

-Jake Johnson has recorded a point (1 g, 1 a) in each of the two games he has played in for the Musketeers.

-Sioux City should be playing at full-strength for the first time since the Christmas break this weekend or next. Alex Tuckerman (eye) will be ready to suit up this weekend in Ohio. Stephane Da Costa (shoulder) will be back either this weekend or next when the Muskies travel to Kearney.

-Sioux City power play is currently at 13.73%, 11^th in the USHL. The Musketeer penalty kill is at 83.27%, 6^th in the league.

Gamblers Fan Write-Up

After a horrible month of January where they didn't win a game, the Gambler got the monkey off their back and got 2 wins beating Tri-City at home and Ohio on the road in the month of February. The highlight of the month for most of the fans came on Feburary 26 when PMI made the hard decision and fired Head Coach Mark Mazzoleni. They named assistant coach Dave Insalaco interim coach for the rest of the year. The month of March for the Gambler will consist of 5 home games and 5 on the road and the schedule is not easy. They play back to back games at home against Omaha and Lincoln and one against Waterloo. The road they will play back to back at Tri-City and then one game at Chicago, Ohio and Indy. The Gamblers leading scorer is Mike Borisenok with 12 goals and 15 assists. The Gamblers will also be getting back Jacob Youso and Chase Drake to the team, now that their high school teams were eliminated from the playoffs. The Goalies Neil Conway (3.66 gaa) and Aaron Crandall (3.31 gaa) have been solid in net. The Gamblers are eliminated from the playoffs so the only thing they can do is play hard the rest of the season and finish on a high note. It will also be very interesting the next couple months to see who the new coach will be???

Steel Write-Up

The month of January was more than good to the Steel, as they went 8-0-1, playing six of the ten games on the road. The lone loss was a shootout at Tri City. The Steel started the month in 4th place in the East behind Indiana, Cedar Rapids and Waterloo and despite the great month also ended the month in 4th, as the Black Hawks were almost as hot as the Steel matching wins with them. The highlight of the month was two wins over Cedar Rapids as the Steel took both ends of the home and home series. CR was on a six game home win streak and had a 9-0-1 record the last ten games vs the Steel. Big wins for the Steel.

The month of February already has two games in the books, both losses to the Indiana Ice who lead the whole league in points. This was a chance to gauge the Steel's recent successful run against the top team in the league, and although the Steel went winless vs Indiana they didn't disappoint. The home and home vs the Ice saw both games end with Indy winning 2-1, although the Saturday contest in Chicago went to an 8 round shootout before the Steel finally fell.

The remainder of February will see the Steel battle some top clubs. With the two vs Indy out of the way the Steel are at Omaha next, then go to Sioux City before returning home to play the Musketeers two more times. Indeed a rough stretch for any club, as the six games have the Steel facing the top teams in each division, Indy and Omaha, and the second place Musketeers. February has the Steel at home for six of the ten games, including five in a row.

Stars Fan Write-Up

The month of January was a good one for the Stars. Lincoln went 8-1, losing the final game of the month at Waterloo. The Stars recorded a season-best 10-game win streak before falling to Waterloo. The Stars were led by the consistently-strong goaltending of David Reekie, a midseason acquisition. Reekie’s four shutouts, 1.27 GAA and .96 save percentage all lead the USHL. Ryan Kretzer and Jason Gregoire were the top forwards for the Stars during their win streak. Kretzer had 7 goals and 10 assists to take over the league lead in points and Gregoire carries an 11-game point streak (11 goals, 7 assists) into the Feb. 1st match-up with Omaha.

February will be a key month for the Stars if they want to continue their ascent up the standings. Lincoln is in third place in the West division, four points behind the Sioux City Musketeers, but the Muskies have three games in hand on the Stars. The Stars face division-leading Omaha twice in the first week of February. The Stars also have a chance to avenge their last two defeats to Waterloo when the Blackhawks come to Lincoln on Feb. 2nd. Lincoln will be tested in three key road games against divisional opponents Sioux City, Sioux Falls and Tri-City. In addition to Waterloo, Lincoln will also face the top two teams in the East division, Indiana and Cedar Rapids.

The Sioux City Musketeers struggled through the month of January with a 3-5-1 and now sit with a 23-10-1 record; good for 2^nd place in West Division and 3^rd place overall in the USHL.

Last Week Recap:

The Muskies hosted two home games last weekend, going 1-1. Sioux City dropped a 4-1 decision Friday night to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and defeated the Tri-City Storm 5-2 Saturday.

Cedar Rapids scored 2 goals in the first 3:11 of the game Friday and never looked back. Seth Helgeson scored the lone Musketeer goal in the setback. The Muskies came back with an outstanding effort on Saturday, scoring 3 goals in a 49-second span in the 2^nd period. Josh Robinson picked up the victory in net.

Up Next:

Sioux City plays two games at the Tyson Events Center this weekend. On Friday, the Waterloo Blackhawks come to town. The Musketeers are 1-1 on the season against Waterloo, dropping their last decision to them 2-0 at Young Arena. On Saturday, the Sioux Falls Stampede come calling. Sioux City is 3-1 v.s. their rivals this season. The Muskies hit the road on Tuesday to take on Tri-City, who they are 4-0 against.

Musketeer Tidbits:

-Sioux City forward Alex Tuckerman won the Ron Woodey Award for being the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 USHL All-Star Game held in Green Bay. Tuckerman tallied 2 goals in the contest

-Jake Johnson was added to the roster and is expected to join the team at the conclusion of his Minnesota high school season. Johnson is currently 4^th in the state in scoring with 22 goals and 40 assists in 22 games

-Defenseman Cody Butcher was suspended for last Saturday’s game because of too many 10-minute misconducts

-After going to Tri-City on Tuesday, The Musketeers are back at home for two games against Lincoln and Chicago. They then go to Cedar Rapids on 2/12

Lancers Fan Write-Up

The Lancers struggled immediately after the Christmas break going 1-3-1 in the first five games following the break, with losses to Indiana, Sioux Falls, and Lincoln. Since that time, the Lancers have gone 6-0-1 including wins over Indiana, Waterloo, Sioux Falls and Des Moines. The only blemish in the last seven games was an overtime loss to Indiana on the road.

The Lancers present a very balanced offensive effort led by Barry Almedia and Chris Connelly. Matt White started hot after the break, only to suffer a bruised spleen and is no out for 6 to 8 weeks. The loss of White is tempered by the return of Joe Diamond who returned from an ankle injury and pnuemonia to score goals in back to back games against Waterloo and Sioux Falls. Lancer youngster Dakota Eveland is beginning to show his talents, and should be a key down the stretch. With the loss of White, the Lancers do need highly touted Nico Sacchetti to step up his offensive numbers.

After struggling early in the month, the Lancers "D" corp has played better in the last 7 games. The blueliners are led by Captain Chris Hepp and underrated Kier Ross. Joe Sova, Will O'Neil, and quickly improving Tyler Elbrecht generate the offense from the "D" corp and all have continued to improve on the defensive side of the game.

The Lancers remain solid in net with both Drew Palmisano and Shane Madalora playing well and giving the Lancers the chance to win almost every night.

February will be a key month to the Lancer success in the West Division as they play Lincoln twice (Feb 1&5), Sioux City twice (Feb 22&29), Tri Cities twice (Feb 12&15), and Des Moines twice (Feb 2&23). The Lancers also visit Waterloo (2-9) and host Chicago (2-0)

The Lancers will be without Matt White for 6 to 8 weeks with the bruised spleen. Patrick Wierciotch should be returning from a broken thumb in the next couple of weeks.

RoughRiders Fan Write-Up

The month of January was a rollercoaster ride for the RoughRiders, after starting the month with a win over arch-rival Waterloo they took the next three games against Waterloo. Since then they have only won 3 of 6 including 2 loses to Chicago and 1 to Ohio, with wins over Sioux Falls, Sioux City and Des Moines. January also brought the return of a familiar face in Robin Bergman who left Notre Dame around the middle of the month. Casey Wellman and Doug Jones enjoyed the month each with 11 points in 10 games. Matt Donovan also has caught fire with 10 points in the last 10 games, including 5 goals in his last 6 games and an amazing +9. Doug Leaverton and Zak Stone scored their first USHL Goals.

Although the month of February is a short one, it won't seem that way to the RoughRiders who have 12 games in the upcoming month. They start with 4 games in the outskirts of the USHL with 2 games in Ohio followed by 2 games in Tri-City the next weekend. This month also includes 2 important games vs the East leading Indiana Ice, and 1 at Waterloo. They also play vs Sioux City, at Sioux Falls, vs Lincoln, vs and at Green Bay.

Gamblers Fan Write-Up

The Gamblers are hoping to get back on track after a horrible month of January. They went 0-9-1 and have not won a game since Dec 15. During that span in January they were shutout 4 times and 3 were in a row. They were shutout a total of 2:11:09 seconds Starting in Lincoln, Sioux falls and Chicago and the other one was against Cedar Rapids. Hopefully they can get all there players back and turn it on in February. Mike Borisenok should be back soon from a should injury and Anthony Hayes is starting to play after battling pneumonia. The Gamblers goalies have been good but needs more help from the defense (Aaron Crandall(3.40 GAA) and Neil Conway (3.78 GAA). The Gamblers Leader in points is C.J. Lee with 13 Goals and 9 Assists and the Fans Favorite Taylor McReynolds has been working his ass off all year. The Gamblers play a total of 11 games the month of February including a make up game against Cedar Rapids that was canceled because of bad weather on December 1. Their home games include 2 against Tri-City and 1 against Indy, Cedar Rapids and Ohio. The Gamblers go out on the road for 2 against Ohio and Waterloo and 1 against Indy and Cedar Rapids.

Chicago Steel Write-up

The Chicago Steel began the post Andy Miele era with two games at Tri City. They began the week in 4th place three points behind the Black Hawks and ended the week in the same position, as they lost in a shootout on Friday but rebounded for a win on Saturday and left Tri City with three points.

Friday saw the Steel start backup Nick Pisellini as the Steel lost in a shootout 5-4. The Steel entered the 3rd period down 4-2 but were able to come up with two goals to send the game into OT. After a scoreless OT the Steel also failed to net a goal in the shootout. Cory Chakeen scored twice including the goal to send it to OT. Mark Anthoine and Drew Leblanc also scored. Leblanc and Chakeen were both a plus 3 for the game. Pisselini stopped 20 of 24 and took the loss.

Saturday saw the Steel win a wild affair 4-1 as both teams combined for 92 PIM and 21 penalties. Pissellini got another start, but was ejected at the 12:00 mark of the 2nd period as he and Aaron Rock, who was also ejected, engaged in a rare goalie fight. Chicago was 3-7 on the PP and their 12th ranked PK held the Storm 0-5 on the PP. Luca Cunti, Brian Olsson and Dman John Moore scored power play goals and Leblanc scored at even strength. Rob Madore came in in relief for the ejected Pisellini and stopped all 16 shots he saw, but Pisselini left while the Steel were leading and got the win.

Des Moines Head Coach Regg Simon to the Des Moines Register after his team's 7-1 loss to Omaha on Friday, a game in which he was ejected.

The Lancers came out and scored early. It was 3-0 by the 16:26 mark before Des Moines changed goalies. That didn't help the Bucs too much as the Lancers were able to score a short-handed goal to take a 4-0 lead into intermission. Omaha added another goal in the 2nd. Des Moines was able to end the shut-out bid early into the 3rd on the power play. Things didn't get much better for the Bucs as the Lancers ended up getting doughnuts plus 1.

Saturday was a different story. Bucs and Lancers played a more traditional Lancers/Bucs-type game. Lancers ended up leaving the Madhouse on Hickman with a 4-3 victory. The fireworks didn't take long to warm up there, 55 seconds into the tilt, Greg Burgdoerfer and Andrew Conboy squared off for a bout.

The Bucs were able to get on the board first a little over halfway though the the first with Alexander Denezhkin scoring his first USHL goal, but the Lancers tied it up prior to heading into intermission.

The second period saw the Lancers add two more goals taking a 3-1 lead before Burgdoerfer deposited a short-handed goal into the twine to cut the lead to one. The Lancers added a power play goal to regain the two-goal advantage. Before the period ended Burgdoerfer got his "Gordie Howe" Hat Trick, with a beauty move to freeze both the goalie and defender and just slide the puck over to Rody Selk for the easy goal.

Neither team added to the scoreboard during the third. The Bucs were able to score more in one game this weekend than the #3 team in the League did all weekend.

Tri-City Storm Write-up

The Tri-City Storm completed the team's first three games in three nights weekend, splitting two games on home ice with Chicago, then dropping a 2-1 decision at Omaha on Sunday.

In Friday's contest with Chicago, Chris Hickey scored twice, as the Storm built a 4-2 lead after two. The Steel then scored twice in the third to force overtime. With no scoring in the extra session, the game progressed to a deciding shoot out. Mike Cichy and Troy Mattila scored in the first two rounds, which was all Tri-City needed, as goaltender Nick Hopper stopped all four shots he faced, in leading the Storm to the 5-4 win.

In Saturday's game, Tri-City scored first, as Mario Lamoureux scored his third short handed goal of the season 11:11 in the contest. The lead last just 45 seconds. Chicago scored twice to lead 2-1 after one, then added a goal in each of the next two periods, to win 4-1.

The Storm traveled to Omaha to close the weekend with a Sunday afternoon contest. Tri-City and the Lancers both threw tough defenses and the game remained scoreless until late in the second period. Storm goaltender Nick Hopper hit Josh Berge at center with a breakout pass to start a quick transition rush. Berge then fed Mike Cichy, who passed back up the slot to Jordan Willert, who scored a power play goal at 18:03, giving the Storm a 1-0 lead through two. Omaha tied the game with a Travis Noval power play goal at 9:23 of the third, then Chris Hepp scored on a mad scramble just before time expired, giving Omaha the 2-1 win.

Omaha Lancers Write-up

The Lancers travel to Indy this weekend for a pair of games this weekend against the Ice. The teams have split 2 games this year with the Lancers winning 3-1 in October and the Ice winning at the MAC 4-2 on December 28th.

The Lancers will be without Patrick Wiercioch due to a thumb injury and Joe Diamond is still recovering from an ankle injury and is "day to day" at this time. The Lancers battled the flu bug last weekend with Keir Ross playing through the flu, and Shane Madolora missing both games last weekend.

In alot of ways, these two teams are very similar to each other, and match up evenly with each other. Both teams have very skilled forwards, have depth at forward, play solid "D", and have quality goaltending.

The Lancers did play much better last weekend taking two games from Des Moines and edging Tri-Cities on Sunday. Like almost every hockey game, this weekend will be decided by three things:

1. Special teams - Neither team has generated much on the power play this year against the other. If either team can punch in a couple of power play goals, they will likely be in great shape. Indy has an impressive power play, and moves the puck quickly to generate alot of backdoor chances.

2. Forecheck - When the Lancers have skated and checked this year, they have played well. When they stand or reach for the puck, they are a poor to average team.

3. Goaltending - The Lancers have a solid 1-2 punch with Michigan State recruit Drew Palmisano and Shane Madolora. Both have the ability cover defensive mistakes made by the Lancers. The Ice have Scott Darling. He is one of the biggest goalies I have seen play. Darling plays angles well, and obviously fills up a ton of net.

This will be an intesting series as the Lancers currently lead the West and Indiana leads the East. Indiana plays well at home at 14-2-2 and the Lancers are respectable on the road at 10-6-2.

Lincoln Stars Write-up

The Lincoln Stars extended their winning streak to 6 games with a weekend sweep of the Sioux City Musketeers. Jason Gregoire had two goals and David Reekie stopped 30-of-31 shots to lead Lincoln to a 6-1 win on Friday night at the Ice Box. The teams traveled to Sioux City for Saturday's game. Gregoire scored a power-play goal in the second period to give Lincoln the 1-0 victory, marking the second straight game Sioux City has been shutout at home. Reekie was stellar again in net, stopping all 38 Musketeer shots. For his efforts, Reekie was named USHL Goaltender of the Week for the second straight week and third time in his short career in Lincoln. His 1.21 goals against average and .963 save percentage are best in the USHL. In addition to the improvement in goaltending, the Stars have relied on improved play from their defensemen, not just in the defensive zone, but in the offensive end as well. The Stars D-men have combined for 6 goals during the win streak, while they only combined for 7 goals in the previous 26 games. Leading the way is Jake Newton, who has recorded 7 points (4 goals, 3 assists) since Christmas break. The Stars' schedule is favorable to continue their winning streak this week, as they play 3 games at home against two of the worst records in the USHL. The Stars host Des Moines, losers of four straight, on Tuesday and host Green Bay for a pair of games this weekend. Lincoln is 2-2 vs. Des Moines this year, with the Stars taking the last game 4-1 at Des Moines, the start of the Stars' current winning streak. If Reekie is in net against Des Moines, it will pit the league¢s worst offense against the league's best goaltender, which may not bode well for the Buccaneers. Perhaps backup goaltender Kevin Murdock may see some playing time this week. Murdock hasn't played since December 14th because of Reekie's spectacular play.

Gamblers Write-Up

The Green Bay Gamblers take the long trip out west for three games. Friday and Saturday night they play Lincoln and on Sunday they play Sioux falls. The Gamblers are looking to get the monkey off their back and get their first win in 2008, while the fans are trying to get the monkey of a coach off the bench and get someone that knows how to coach hockey. The Gamblers haven't played Lincoln this year and it won't be easy. Their goaltender Reekie(9-2-0) has been on fire lately with a GAA of 1.21. Their other goalie Murdock(3-6) with a 3.14 not as good but with them playing the Gamblers I would think he will get at least one start. Also with Ryan Kretzer(15 goals, 21 assists) and Jason Gregoire(14 goals, 21 assists) will be hard to stop. Brady Hjelle stopped 57 of 60 shots as the RoughRiders swept the unusual 2 game series in Green Bay. Saturday's game was postponed due to the NHL Playoffs. Casey Wellman and Kyle Flanagan each scored 2 goals in Sunday afternoon's win. Zak Stone scored his first USHL goal and Nick Oddo kept his hot streak alive (5 goals in last 10 games). This upcoming weekend gives the RoughRiders a chance at revenge as they play Sioux Falls on Saturday night in Cedar Rapids a team who defeated the RoughRiders just before Christmas break, but first the RoughRiders face the Chicago Steel on Wednesday night in Bensenville and then again on Friday at the Stable. Chicago has been on a streak as of late going 6-0-1 in their last seven games. Cedar Rapids is 3-0 vs Chicago this season with Brady Hjelle earning all of those wins.
