In front of a Wednesday crowd of 1,288 the Steel beat the RoughRiders 4-2, and now have a two game winning streak as they pulled to within one point of 3rd place Waterloo. The Steel sent out #1 goalie Rob Madore as CR sent out backup Kent Patterson. CR outshot the Steel 34-28 as neither team led by more than one goal, until John Moore scored for the Steel at 14:20 of the 3rd putting them up 4-2.

The Steel struck first as Cory Chakeen came in on a 1 on 2 on a long pass from Anthoine. Cory let one go from the circle that squirted through Patterson's legs. The Steel took the play to the Riders and won most of the battles for loose pucks, as CR seemed a bit sluggish in the 1st.

The 2nd saw CR come out flying as they outshot the Steel 15-8. After Madore made many nice saves Donavon finally got CR on the scoreboard at 15:47 on a nice shot from the low circle that beat Madore board side. The period ended 1-1.

The game really opened up in the 3rd as each team took 10 shots. At 1:33 Chakeen brought the crowd to its feet with an unassisted highlight reel goal. He got the puck on a turnover at mid ice and came in on another 1 on 2. The Dmen were split and waiting for him as he came inside the blueline and he zigged, zagged and weaved through both of them and beat Patterson high glove side from 5 feet with a Dman draped on him. An unreal display of skill by Chakeen that had those in attendance on their feet cheering.

Thompson answered with an unassisted rush that saw him come in wide and put one at Madore's pads which Rob kicked out, but Thompson knocked home is own rebound to tie it at two. The Steels next two goals came from outworking the Riders in their end. After cycling the puck and digging along the boards for a minute or so Knelman grabbed the puck from behind the net and got to the front and buried a backhander. The 4th goal saw the Steel again cycle and dig until Drew Lablanc got the puck and from behind the net and saw Dman John Moore come to the net from the blueline and fill the open ice. Leblanc hit him on the tape and Moore beat Patterson from 7 feet. Two great hustle plays by all five Steel players on the last two goals.

A pretty closely contested game, but the Steel played better longer and deserved the win. They didn't face the great goaltending of Hjelle, but they outplayed the RoughRiders just the same. A great win for the Steel who had lost all three games to CR this year.

Some notes: Mike Walsh is now wearing the C now that Mielle is gone. I know Otto had the C, but after he went on the IR I think Poapst gave it to Mielle........ Ryan Schnell has become as valuable as any Steel player. The last 3-4 games I've seen him he has hit everything in sight, has really improved his puck handling and has fought well when challenged. The kid can be a force because of his skill and size..... Chelios has really improved since I saw him in October. He is much more confident and stronger. His forechecking was excellent.... I think Thompson has hit a growth spurt. He looks a few inches taller since October.

The captain's "C" is based on the what jersey is worn.

The Steel have shown in the last three games that they aren't a one man team. Andy will be missed no doubt, but don't be surprised if the Steel finish strong!
