Arizona's Best

When you think of Arizona, hockey usually isn't the first thing to come to mind. People will say Arizona isn't a hockey state, but just ask that question to the Hamburg brothers, Andrew and Anthony, and they will be quick to tell you different.

Andrew, a 1989 born player, will spend this season in the USHL with the Waterloo Black Hawks. Following his season with the Hawks, he will enroll at Colorado College of the WCHA. Hamburg spent last season playing for the Dallas Stars Midget team. Waterloo selected Andrew in the 3rd round of the USHL futures draft last fall. He could turn into the biggest steal of that draft, as he has a lot of potential and has a nose for the back of the net. Andrew was recently named to the first team of USHN's Midget AAA all-stars for the 06-07 season.

Anthony, a 1991 born player, will play this season with the Dallas Stars U-18 AAA team this fall before hopefully making the jump to the USHL. He was drafted by the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL bantam draft, but has made it clear he has his heart set on college hockey. Anthony played for the Des Moines team in the USHL showcase camp, and earned a tryout with the Tri-City Storm. Though he played well, he did not make the all-star game. Anthony was named MVP of the Calgary Stampede Tournament. He has been rumored to have interest in Colorado College, Denver, and Harvard for his college choices.

The Hamburg brothers will be putting up big points in the USHL for a few years. Anthony has yet to commit to a college, so he has time to outproduce his brother. Andrew will make his winter home in Waterloo, and Anthony says he would just like to play in the USHL and would just love the opportunity.

Watch for these guys to light the lamp at a rink near you.

I watched Andrew considerably at the Waterloo invite camp last week. He did not perform, period. He skated around without any intensity, hardly ever finished a check and rarely spent time along the boards fighting for a loose puck. He rarely backchecked. He did make a few nice passes but none that I saw resulted in a scoring chance. I really don't get it. Someone tell me what CC sees in this kid? He must be like T. Vanek was in the league a few years ago eg a scoring machine but i think he only had two goals in six games.

If he is going to be a scorer in this league he has a long way to go. I saw Saturday's games and could not even tell he was on the ice. Waterloo has a bunch of forwards that showed more than this kid. He may have a tough time making the line up. Good Luck!

It is always the same "hype vs substance" . The players that earn their stripes rarely get noticed and the ones that have the right mouth pieces seem to get all the ink. I like the fact that you write about kids that are up and comers, but it would be nice to have all of the players compete anonymously with the evaluaters blinded to the names and they had to grade on play only. I wonder what the outcome would be. I talked to a scout for a tier one jr a team and he said that every one of their scouted players made their team. He feels like they did a great job of scouting and that is why they had no suprises. I think that if they had blinders on the players identity they would have had an entirely different team. I am not trying to put anybody down, rather I am trying to be realistic.

i played with one of the 2 jackass brothers as we call them at home. neither are good guys to play with, selfish and lazy. I can't believe that they are having articles written about them. It's not that im jelous, i play in a good jr league, but these guys are tools. CC is nuts. no way they are going to make it.

I really wonder what happens after a kids gets a scholarship to a D1 school? Do some/many of them stop playing hard? I'm sorry but most kids cannot rely on talent alone at the Jr A and D1 level.

I agree with the "hype vs substance" post. I could not agree more with everything you said there. Great post and so true...
