Might be a simple question... are the ushl players currently on the protected lists for the USHL teams, wanting to be on 2 different leagues and essentially two teams just in case they get released during the ushl hockey season? Is there an advantage to having the NAHL team draft you even though you would only go if things did not work out for you on your current USHL team? Thanks for any input.
every ushl kid taken by nahl teams in this draft are guys who coldnt play in ushl. that is why nahl is lower league.
Are the USHL players released from their teams, or are they looking to leave the teams they are on?
Yes, its called security.
Yes... the advantage would simply be that if you didn't make a USHL team the next best league would be the NAHL, aside from the OHL. Therefore , if you wanted to continue playing the best bet would be for you to play with that NAHL team that drafted you. By the team drafting you , you are stuck to that team if the USHL doesnt work out( so you wouldn't be able to pick any team you would want). It looks like man NAHL teams made draft picks that had rights tide to the USHL. The main reason for this was there are coaching changes in both Des Moines and Green Bay and they figure some of these players will get released. It's just a guessing game that they hope turns out in the best way possible for them. Many of the drafted USHL players wont know till June or July if they made their squads, and neither will the NAHL coaches.
I am not as familiar with the NAHL draft, so excuse my ignorance, but has it been a common occurrence in the past to draft so many players that were either drafted or rostered by a USHL team? I would guess a team would not want to waste a draft pick on a player unless they were somewhat of a sure thing or maybe that's different with the NAHL and draft picks aren't as valued as their tendered players are. Just wondering...
Also, is there somewhere that lists the tendered players for each of the NAHL teams?
The NAHL draft is not as significant as the draft process in the USHL due to the tenders used by the NAHL teams. Each NAHL team used to have 10 tenders, (I think the current # may be 7 or 8) that they may use throughout the season to tab their top picks. The player and team sign the tender and the form is sent to the NAHL league office. That player is then commited to that particular NAHL team. Those players may also be drafted by USHL teams, alhtough some NAHL teams discourage their "tendered" players from attending USHL tryout camps. I think we will continue to see the trend of other junior leagues drafting USHL players and trying to present themselves as the "next best option" for players and their families. If a player gets cut or released from a USHL team, they would at least know where they will play next, and for what team. The other thing you have to remember is that the NAHL does not have to submit final protected lists to their league office until much later than the USHL. Many NAHL teams carry upwards of 30-35 players on their rosters during the first part of the season.
I have never heard of 30-35 roster players on the NaHL teams. They cut to 25 by Sept.
Lotta coaches in the USHL now with roots or ties in the NAHL...
And that is a problem why?
I never said it was a problem... if you'd stop to look at things in other than a negative light, you might read between the lines on this one...
I think there is an update on the new Washington teams drafts.
Kinda makes me nervous that Stephen Carew is on there he should be a good player this season. I kinda wish that they would try to get C.J. Lee out of here. And how much you want to bet Chris Saricino from the gamblers won't be back going to the Bandits has to be a death sentence.
Some some games of the RR tryouts. Totally non impressive with the draft picks. Their first round pick is slow and got beat all weekend.
Half the kids drafted on the bandits are not even showing up because of the change in coaching they are off to another team.
Who care about the bandits, they will never be the same and they will NOT be great this year. Marquette will do great! Too many Minnesota teams and none will do any good.
The Bandits winning season is over, like any other team that repeats back to back championships. Their new coach proved that on his own with the team he coached on for the past few years. I am sure the Bandits do not want to be on the bottom of the Nahl totem pole. But if the shoe fits.
Next season a new team will be in the winners circle.
Why is there a NAHL spot on this Blog? Things here are constantly changing.
Most likely because the draft featured many players with USHL ties. I blogged about the previous NAHL draft as well, and I will probably blog about it next time as well.
