Sova Commits

Omaha defenseman, Joe Sova, has committed to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, according to Chris Heisenberg.

Sova, a third year veteran, currently has 10 points on the season and is a +13. The Berwyn, Illinois native has also spent time with Waterloo and Sioux City prior to Omaha.

Sova is on the larger side, standing in at 6'2" 190 lbs, but can be a liability on the ice at times. He has been known to pinch in at the wrong times and will get beat multiple times during games. Some work with his skating could help the problem, but he has turned into a productive defenseman these past two years.

Sova will enroll next fall for the Nanooks.

Ryan, I think your assessment of Sova is dead on (not surprising since you saw him play in Sioux City). He has a nice offensive upside, skates well hanles the puck well and has a decent shot. He plays one on one defense OK and with his size plays guys in the corner well. His big problem is making wrong reads on the point as to when to pinch and when to stay back. He has been beat a few times this year in those situations, paticularily v. Tri-City he faked a shot on the PP, then mishanled the puck leading to a SH goal. However, in Coach Hastings "D" first system, Sova is progressing nicely, and his mistakes are becoming fewer each game. Should be a nice pick up for Alaska.
