For the two goaltenders in Bowling Green's second round playoff game against the Miami RedHawks in Oxford, there is more than the in-state hockey rivalry between BG junior Jimmy Spratt and RedHawk goalie Jeff Zatkoff.
Both are natives of Chesterfield, Mich., and they shared the goaltending duties for the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 2004-05. Spratt, who is a year older, never played hockey with Zatkoff until their stint together in the USHL; however, the two did know each other on a personal level, thanks to their dads.
"Jimmy played a majority of the games, but Jeff improved significantly that year and we turned to him in February. He won, I believe, four or five in a row, and proved to start a rivalry for the No. 1 spot. That was a good situation for me because I had two of them now who could step in there and win a game for us," said Musketeers head coach and general manager Dave Siciliano.
"You can't really think of it that way, it's just another game. Whether it is Jeff Zatkoff or Billy Sauer, it's just another goalie. The first couple times we played against each other it was weird, but we're juniors in college now so it's something we've done before," Spratt said.
